02/21/08 Update: We now have 50 members in our
FTDNA Humphrey project, and have merged family trees for our 5 E3b
members, all descendents of Jonas Humphrey, circa 1565, of Wendover,
Buckinghamshire. His grandson Jonas immigrated to Massachusetts in 1635
with his father Jonas, and brother James. In the past 6 months we've found more civil & legal
records in Lyme Regis, Dorset & Honiton, Devon linking the Humphrey
families there, many recorded as Humphrey, alias Hues. We continue to research all Humphrey lineages (all spellings) in America & Europe.
Recent searches in Dorset have yielded records of
relationships, possibly genetic, with Humphry families in Honiton,
Devon, some of whom reflect an earlier surname, Hue(s). We are
currently researching the possibilities that Michael Humphrey, 1577,
Honiton, was of a former Hues family. There were many Humphrey, alias
Hues, families in the Honiton area, well into the 19th century. In this search of Lyme Regis, Dorset Parish & Court
records, and in proximate areas, we found further evidence of Michael
Humphrey having 2 marriages: first to Susanna(h) (Ann), with
daughter Sarah, b. 1608, buried 1609, and sons Michael & Samuel,
both of whom died in their teenage years. We have burial but no birth
records of these 2 sons. Michael was married a 2nd time, 1615,
Bridport, to Martha Pride, had 7 children including son Michael, 1620,
my ancestor, and Samuel, 1631, who was a business partner of Michael,
and later moved to St. Malo, Brittany, France, where he was buried. For many years we were puzzled by some apparent
inconsistencies, once of which is of a son Michael, buried
in June 1620, and a son Michael christened Sept 10, 1620. This now
makes sense in the context of 2 marriages. We're still searching
for the birth records of sons Michael & Samuel of the
1st marriage. We're looking for Hue(s) families for DNA testing,
especially any who may be in the Honiton, Devon area, or men who have
ancestors from the area - also seeking Humphrey men in that area, and
more generally, southern England. 06/07/07 Update: We have 40 members in our FTDNA Humphrey
project. New test results indicate Haplogroups R1b, R1a, I1a, E3b,
& I1c. The great majority continue to be R1b. We have 3 new
E3b
members, for a total of 5, and 4 of these are close matches and are
descendents of Jonas Humphrey, 1585, Wendover, Bucks,
England. He immigrated to America in 1635, and we've now successfully
identified the 2 earliest known Humphrey lineages in America: Jonas
& Michael of Lyme Regis, Dorset, immigrating in 1635 and 1640. We now have copies of Parish records, verifying the
marriage of my ancestor, Michael Humphrey & Martha Pride, Bridport,
Dorset, July 4, 1615. They were the parents of my immigrant ancestor
Michael, Lyme Regis, 1620. Past updates have been moved to the bottom of this page. The DNA results and a description of relationships can be found at:
DNA
Results & Analysis
at this website,
![]() " Sept 10 (1620) Michaell sonne of Michaell Humfrey bapt. " Our general goal is to identify Humphrey
family lineages in America & Europe. We
want to find family relationships and determine our most recent
common ancestry. My lineage is from
Michael Humphrey, who
immigrated from Lyme Regis, Dorset,
England, to Connecticut in 1640. Our DNA
project initially differentiated 2 distinct genetic lines,
& revealed common ancestry with
Liles, Sutton, Morton & Peet families, circa (1100 -
1500). It
has corroborated our genealogical paper trail to English ancestry, suggested
historical Norman/Scandinavian ancestry,
possible Danish/Anglo-Saxon ancestry, and discovered a preponderance of
separate Celtic/Irish/Welsh
lineages. The Humphrey surname has
British/Norman/Scandinavian roots: appearing in America from
1630;
in
England, Wales, & Ireland before 1066 and in greater numbers
afterwards; Normandy
from the 8th century; and in Scandinavia (& Britain) by the 5th
century. My line's DNA
test results indicate we are in Y - chromosome haplogroup
"I", a "clan"
that has been in Scandinavia for several thousand
years, most likely a few thousand years after the LGM (Last Glacial
Maximum, "peak" of the last Ice Age). Our specific subclade is I1a*,
ascertained by SNP test (P30
& P40), in August, 2004 by Trace Genetics, then confirmed with more
detailed testing by EthnoAncestry in 2006. DNA
testing has identified many Humphrey(s) lineages with Celtic ancestry,
haplogroup R1b, the most prevalent in Europe. We are finding 6x more
R1b
lineages than "I", consistent with the predominance of R1b in Britain
and western Europe generally. After the Viking era,
there were many Irish Celtic natives who adopted Scandinavian surnames,
as well as many Britons in England who adopted Scandinavian surnames. The E3b Humphrey men (typically western
British Isles ancestry) in our FTDNA project is about 12% of our total
of 40, 12-times higher than the < 1% found in the British
Isles. Thus far 4 of these 5 are all descended from Jonas
Humphrey. *** Possible Migrations to England of Humphrey(s) ancestors *** Given the very high
percentage of R1b in Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and
given the Celtic history in Europe, it seems likely that the
indigenous/Celtic
population in the British Isles prior to the Roman era is a natural
initial source of R1b in England today. E3b & J2 populations
may have
come before or with the Romans, a currently popular notion, as well as
afterwards. A recent book, The Origins of the British, by Stephen
Oppenheimer, strongly suggests that original British natives, predating
Celtic, were Mediterreanean, also predominantly R1b. He has
strong Linguistic, Archaelogical, & genetic evidence. This book is
just now available in the U.S., Dec'2006.
Recent findings in a paper by Cruciani, Underhill, et al, suggest that the specific subclades of E3b in England may have migrated from the Mediteranean as recently as 5-6k years ago. Combining family verbal lore, surname linguistics, English & Norman history, we now have more evidence to support the supposition that our I1a* lines had Norwegian or Danish ancestors as recently as year 400, possible Norman ancestors from approximately year 900, & English ancestors, likely in southern England, the Channel Islands and/or Isle of Wight, circa 1066, & with the Norman invasion at Hastings. For several centuries, the surname Humphrey has been concentrated in the Southeast of England, East Anglia, and Yorkshire. Currently, the surname Humphreys (or Humphries) is concentrated in Wales. However, there are other logical possibilities supported by English history & the genetic results: (1) Our ancestors were Norwegian Vikings migrating to Northwest England in the 10th & 11th centuries (possibly through Ireland), eastward toward York, Norfolk, East Anglia, then south to Kent, Surrey, and Sussex, or (2) Danish/German ancestors arriving as Anglo/Saxons in the 5th & 6th centuries, settling in eastern England before the Viking invasions, or (3) arriving in the 9th, 10th & 11th centuries with the Danish Viking invasions & Danelaw, (4) Scandinavian settlers arriving before the Vikings, possibly before the Romans. Oppenheimer suggests that settlements of Haplogroup "I" & "R1b" might have occured during the entire Neolithic, starting some 7000 years ago. Current estimates of the I1a group's age is approximately 7200 years ago. Our I1a* haplotype occurs in Capelli's data (2005) at frequencies of 6.47% in Norway & 5.26% in Denmark. In Capelli's data York has the highest percentage of our I1a* haplotype at 11% of the total, followed by 7.8% in Durness, northern Scotland, 6.8% in the Western Isles, 5.8% in Norfolk, & 5.6% in Penrith, Cumbria. Most of these are known to have been extensively settled by Norwegian Vikings. Ken Nordtvedt has initially suggested that our specific haplotype in I1a* is Norwegian, based on geographical/genetic analysis, & he deems it I1a-N, for Norse. After upgrading my DNA testing to 67 markers, Ken's analysis suggests we might be Anglo-Saxon/Danish. Oppenheimer's analysis suggests Norman Vikings who settled in Eastern England after year 800. See: Ken Nordtdvedt's Analysis The "I" haplogroup in York is 33% of the total sample, the highest concentration in any of the English, Scottish, or Irish regions. In Capelli's 2004 data, the highest level of "I" was in Denmark/Germany at 39.5%, followed by 32.6% in York, 31% in Norfolk, and 28.4% in Norway. Though it's currently thought that our I1a* lineage split from it's parental I1a lineage in western Norway, ~(3000-7000) years ago, it's possible, given today's near-parity ocurrence in Denmark as well as Norway, that our I1a* ancestors may have arrived with pre-Roman, Neolithic settlers from Scandinavia, Germanic mercenaries with the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, or later with the Danish or NorwegianVikings, or with the Normans, circa 1066. Also, peaceful migrations could have occured at any time since the Neolithic advent of farming, after the glaciers had broken up from the last ice age, and before the British Isles had separated. and continue to occur The Norman-influenced "Humphrey" form of our surname is most prevalent today in eastern England. Ref: census records, 2006. We want to identify & explore as
many Humphrey lineages as
possible, and determine common ancestry. (Database update: As of
4/17/06, we have uploaded 2300 of our 3100+ member database for our
Humphrey families.) |

************************************************************************************* UPDATE: 1/17/05
- We now have 37 marker DNA results for our 9th cousin,
Samuel Humphrey: my brother, cousins & I all match 35/37, 36/37, or
37/37. Our paper trails & these results are sufficient to
establish with confidence that our assumption about the paternity of
Ozias Humphrey, born 1789, is correct: we're descended from Michael
Humphrey of Lyme Regis, born 1620. Our Haplogroup has been SNP
tested as I1a1. We continue to search for other cousins, for Michael's
ancestry in England, France, & Scandinavia: we are still seeking
participants for DNA testing. <>
3/21/05 - We have most likely determined the parents of
Michael
Humphrey: The Mormon Church (LDS) has microfiche of Bishop's
transcripts of Church of England records thought previously to have
been destroyed in the English Civil War in the 1640's. Microfiche
1239204, bundle 1A, contains records from 1579-1635, documenting the
baptisms, marriage, & burial of many of Michael Humphrey's family
in Lyme Regis. Michael was baptised in Lyme Regis, Sept 10, 1620, and
his father's name was Michael. His brother Samuell was baptised Nov 27,
1631, & sister Susan (Susannah), Dec 2, 1627. These records show
the death of a first wife, Susanna in 1607, and we have separate
records showing the marriage to Martha Pride in Bridport, very near
Lyme Regis, July 4, 1615, and the baptism of Michael Humphrey, the
father, in Honiton, Devon, 15 miles NW of Lyme Regis, January 31, 1577.
Except for the marrige of Susannah Humphrey to Thomas Wise in Lyme
Regis, 1655, there's no further mention of the family there. We
know from legal records that Samuell moved to Saint Malo, Brittany,
France in the 1650's, possibly with his mother Martha.
LDS IGI files show Samuell marrying in St Malo, but nothing further. There are several records of litigation with Henry Rose, Samuell in St Malo, & Michael in Simsbury Connecticut, in the 1650's & 60's, and a published letter, Oct 1648, to Michael from his mother, also signed in a PostScript by his brother Samuell (age 17), and sister Susannah (age 21), to corroborate the activities of the family at that time. For many decades this letter was thought to have been signed by the father & mother, a Samuel & Susannah, but the original signature is missing, the last 10 lines of the letter were lost some time before 1883, and the signatures of Samuell & Susannah, are for the Postscript, "Know this, that we are healthy & live well", which appears on the envelope of the letter, not in the letter itself. The book, "Humphreys in America", by Dr. Frederick Humphreys, 1883, published this letter with the P.S. signatures adjacent to the end of the letter, as if these were the original signatures in the letter. So the available evidence all points now to Michael Humphrey & Martha Pride as the parents, from Honiton, Devon, near Lyme Regis, of our immigrant ancestor Michael. We're now looking for the father Michael's parents, possibly in/near Honiton. |

Specific Goals Our goal is to identify the Humphrey
family lineages in America & Europe, including my family's line
from Michael
Humphrey, who
immigrated from Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, to Connecticut in 1640. We
want to find the family relationships and determine the most recent
common ancestry. We are finding many more R1b lineages with
ancestors
in England, Wales, & Ireland than I1a lineages, consistent with the
predominance of R1b in western Europe. As of 12/11/06, we've also
found haplogroups R1a, E3b, J2, I1c. We are seeking descendants of Michael Humphrey,
born 1620 in Lyme Regis, immigrated to Connecticut about 1640, Jonas
Humphrey of Weymouth, Mass, born 1620 in Wendover, Bucks, England,
& also descendants of Ozias Sr., born 1763, & Ozias Jr., born
1789 in Simsbury, CT. One specific goal was to confirm the paternity
of Ozias Jr. That was accomplished in early January, 2005.
A 2nd goal is to find the ancestors of
Michael Humphrey of Lyme Regis. We've finally determined the parents of
Michael (after a 40-year search!) in Bishop's transcripts for Lyme
Regis, 1579-1635, in the LDS archives in Salt Lake City, Microfiche
1239204, bundle 1A. Highly likely, but not proven yet by public
records. We will subsidize DNA testing for members of
the lineage of Michael & Ozias Humphrey. Our DNA project has revealed highly likely
common
ancestry with Liles, Sutton, Morton, & Peet families, circa (1100 -
1500), delineated lineages, and corroborated our genealogical paper
trail to historical Norman and
Scandinavian ancestry.
Who were Michael Humphrey's parents? Michael Humphrey of Honiton, Devon & Martha Pride of
Bridport, Dorset. For at least a century it's been
conjectured that Michael Humphrey's father & mother were Samuel
Humphrey & Susannah of Lyme Regis, Dorset, born ~1590. We've now
located birth, baptismal, & marriage documents that
disprove
this, tho
there are numerous records in the LDS IGI data, RootsWeb, & other
sources that support this notion. See the update above for
details. We're currently searching more Honiton records for
our
genealogy. We know of another Humphrey family there in the 18th
century, that of Ozias, a court painter who relocated to London. And
there are some Humphries of Honiton who changed their surname from
Hughes in the 18th century. Search for cousins Our current
research indicates that our direct paternal line to Michael Humphrey
has no surviving 4th, 6th, or 7th paternal-line male cousins. We are
actively seeking DNA results from our 2nd, 3rd & more distant
cousins. 12/17/06 update: We
have a 25/25 marker perfect match from one of our new members of the
Humphrey surname project at FTDNA. Further testing will support a
recent common paternal-line ancestor. We are currently mergin family
trees. 07/05/04 update: one of our
3rd cousins in upstate NY took a DNA test (with FTDNA), confirming our
genetic relationship & refining our modal haplotype. 10/05/04 update: in a
recent family reunion in upstate NY, we learned of a 9th cousin
in Connecticut, who's took a DNA test & joined our DNA
project at FTDNA. We subsidized this DNA test. We still need DNA results from
5th, 8th & more distant
cousins to establish a Humphrey modal haplotype to help us find the
relationships among Humphrey families in
America & Europe. In addition to Ozias Jr. &
Sr. of Simsbury, mention above, we are seeking members of the
family of Jonas Humphrey, born 1620 in Wendover, Bucks, England, who
immigrated to Dorchester, then Weymouth, Mass., circa 1634 with his
father & brother James. We are also seeking members of the family of David Carlisle Humphreys, born 1741 in Ireland, who came to America about 1764, settling in Greenville, Virginia. Meanwhile, our analysis with the
Fluxus Phylogenetic software indicates
a Y chromosome modal haplotype for Morton, Liles, Sutton, and our
family. The
modal haplotype is the theoretical DNA Y chromosome sequence for the
genetic common ancestor of the 3 families, a single male forefather.
There's only a single marker, 1-step difference from this modal
haplotype,"mv1", to Morton, Liles & Humphrey. From "mv1", there's a
single
marker, 2-step difference to the Sutton family. For details see the Phylogenetic
network diagram, in the DNA results page. The DNA test results are
in a table: DYS
Results, in the DNA
Results & Analysis page. FTDNA signup for

Search for cousins in the Michael Humphrey line:
Apparently, we have no living 4th, 6th, or 7th paternal-line male cousins. The paternal lines from our GGgrandfather & GGGgrandfather have "daughtered out", or these male ancestors had no children. We're in touch with our 3 remaining 2nd male cousins and hope to have some DNA test results in the near future. Meanwhile,
we continue to search for 5th, 8th, and more distant cousins, including
Ozias Sr. & Jr. of Simsbury, mentioned above. (If others surface,
we'll be very happy, as we were when Samuel Humphrey volunteered, our
9th cousin in Santon Center, near Simsbury, Connecticut) Here's a list of our male ancestors back to Michael and some of their male descendants. The phrase "male cousins" below means paternal-line male cousins who are descendants of Michael Humphrey: Myron (Mike) Humphrey b. after 1940 - San Mateo, California Edwin Humphrey b. 1913 - Chickasha, Oklahoma Myron E. Humphrey b. 1884 - Abilene, Kansas & Oklahoma Edwin D. We are actively seeking living descendants for all these who are listed. GGrandfather: Edwin D. Humphrey b. 1855 - sons: Myron, Gilbert, Karl. Gilbert had no children, Karl had sons: Karl, Jr., and Tom, b. 1913. Karl, Jr. died unmarried. Edwin lived in Springwater, N.Y., and Abilene, Kansas. Tom had 3 sons: Tom Jr., Karl, and Michael. These are our 2nd cousins. They live in Nevada, Texas, and Maryland. GGGrandfather: Correll Myron Humphrey, b. 1824, Simsbury, CT. - sons: Edwin D., Henry Wilson, Herbert Lincoln, William Erwin. Henry Wilson had a son, Theodore (Ted), who had sons: William, Roger, and Herbert Myron. Roger has a son, Mark, who lives near the farm. These are our 3rd cousins, living in New York. Correll Myron lived in Springwater, NY, after 1836. GGGGrandfather: Ozias Humphrey, Jr., b. 1789,

sons: John,
Thomas, Nathaniel, Samuel, Joseph. Harvey Hiram Humphrey in Indiana. GGGGGGGGGrandfather: Michael Humphrey, b. 1620, Lyme Regis, Dorset, England - sons: Samuel and John. The potential 8th cousins in John's line are listed above (I'll put them into a table format eventually). I'll list the potential 9th cousins
from Samuel's line in the near future. 10/04/04 update: we met a 9th
cousin in Canton Center, CT, after a reunion with our 3rd cousins in
Springwater, NY, and he is taking a DNA test, so we should soon have
confirmation of the paternity of Ozias Jr. of Simsbury, born 1789. In
Feb, 2005 we got the confirmation of the genetic relationship with
Samuel: a 35/37 marker match, supporting our paper trails indicating
that we are 9th cousins. My brother & I also match our 3rd cousin
in upstate New York, 36/37, confirming what we knew from our
genealogies. *************************************************** |
